textiles

fashion/textiles and sustainability is a really hot topic. I don't feel this space would be offering anything new if i went on to explain those issues. so, instead, i will share some brands, ones that operate slow, intentionally, that are as thoughtful as they are beautiful, and some refreshing ideas, products, methods going on in the industry.

MycoWorks

Fine Mycelium™ is MycoWorks’ patented technology that grows an entirely new class of material. What makes it fascinating is how they control the growth of mycelium (the underground root system of mushrooms).

Instead of letting the fungus grow randomly, they’ve essentially trained the mushroom cells, guiding them as they develop so the cells weave together into a natural fabric. The result is a material that isn’t just soft and flexible, but also incredibly strong, strong enough to compete with leather.

Ok so Fine Mycelium™ is the breakthrough technology/process, and Reishi™ is the biomaterial created with that process. Reishi is designed to look, feel, and perform like top-grade leather — but it’s grown, not farmed.

They also have their “Made With Reishi™” label, which sets it apart as the luxury alternative it is, not just another faux leather product.

MycoWorks has collaborated with brands like Hermès, Ligne Roset, YUME YUME, Deadwood, Heron Preston, and more to create remarkable pieces using their advanced biomaterials.

Musa textilis is the scientific name for Abacá. It’s part of the banana family, but while banana plants give us fruit, Abacá is known for its fibers.

Another big player in the textile revolution is Bananatex® : a fabric made entirely from Abacá, grown in the Philippines. This bio-textile is plastic-free, biodegradable, and cultivated in a way that actually helps heal the land. By growing Abacá in areas once cleared for logging, farmers are contributing to reforestation, boosting biodiversity, and creating new economic opportunities.

Bananatex has teamed up with brands like Balenciaga, Stella McCartney, COS, QWSTION, INUIKII, and many more.
